In the simplest terms, yoga today is a combination of postures to attain strength, flexibility and mobility; breath control and breathing exercises; relaxation and meditation. Together, these disciplines unite mind, body and soul, ensuring good health, great posture, a toned physique and freedom from stress. The benefits are many. There are many other aspects to this ancient practice which will be explored in future posts. I think it will take a lifetime to learn everything there is to know about yoga.
The most difficult question to answer is “What kind of yoga do you teach?” I constantly study all types of yoga and draw the best from all of them. I love the flow of Vinyasa but the technical detail of Iyengar, the depth of Yin. Coming from a fitness background, I like to work hard, but over the years have learned to appreciate the tranquillity and serenity of relaxation and meditation. Meditation is now widely used to treat depression and will help reduce stress which can have a detrimental effect on your health. Pranayama (breathing) has been a revelation.
After 12 years of constant practice and study, I’ve barely scratched the surface and I’m looking forward to continuing my journey over the coming years. Come and join me.
